Step Back and Observe the Scene

"Mask." Acrylic on canvas, 24"x18" $750.
Sometimes it seems like a good thing that I wear a mask when I shop, because it's easy to become annoyed at the least little thing, and my face would mirror my annoyance. Then I relax, and remind myself that whatever it was that annoyed me is really insignificant and just isn't worth expending any energy over.
My great uncle was a successful gambler...you just knew when he narrowed his eyes ever so slightly he was sizing up a situation and deciding how to react to it, but beyond that you couldn't quite read his intention. He taught me a lot about stepping back and observing the scene. Thinking before acting, moving thoughtfully behind that "mask" of his, Uncle Cecil let things roll off. He managed situations and made them work in his favor in a way that could have inspired the likes of Corporal "Radar" O'Reilly, of M.A.S.H. fame. (Cecil actually WAS a company clerk in the Aleutian Islands during WWII.)
My featured painting this month is called "Mask." It is reminiscent of Native American ceremonial masks, and is an homage to my Cherokee ancestors, including Uncle Cecil and his brothers, one of whom was my grandfather. It is available on my website, or you can contact me personally to purchase.
