May I Tell You a Story?

Transcendent, 20”x20”, oil on canvas
I am a painter. I’m also a storyteller. You see, I have Oklahoman roots, and one thing that Oklahomans excel at is telling stories. My relatives told stories for hours...typically funny, and often with a surprise punchline at the end. They told serious stories, too. Family stories, adventure stories, heroic stories, and just stories about life.
You know, since you follow my work, that I paint in an abstract expressionistic style. Lines, colors, and shapes flow through the work, and sometimes I feel like the painting is telling me a story. I start with a basic premise, develop the plot (or the painting develops the plot...I’m never sure which), and work towards the conclusion. It’s definitely a process, and I have to stop frequently to consider what is going on.
The painting I am presenting to you this month is an example of that process. This piece is about searching for answers. The story led me along numerous paths, through shadow and light, until I spotted a light shining in the distance. As I metaphorically approached it (with a brush full of paint) a staircase emerged, leading me to a mysterious bright structure at the top. I don’t really know what the structure is...I leave that to YOU, the viewer. But the story/painting has led us out of the depths and up to a brighter place. To me it signifies hope and moving forward, thus the title of this piece: Transcendent.
